If it's mostly you, plus occasional passengers, the K4 is plenty of car. Adults fit in the back for a trip to dinner without complaint.

If you regularly carry adults in back, or you have rear-facing car seats, or you're putting golf clubs and luggage in the trunk at the same time, the K5's extra room stops being theoretical.

A useful test: think about the last five times your back seat was occupied. If it was kids or short trips, K4. If it was adults on longer drives, K5.

Engines and how they drive

K4: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission on non-turbo models. There's also a turbocharged version — the 2026 K4 hatchback turbo makes 190 horsepower and stays under $30,000.

K5: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque with an eight-speed automatic. The K5 GT steps up to a turbo with a quick-shifting eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

What this means in daily driving: the K4 is perfectly adequate. Merging onto the 405 with the base engine takes a bit of planning but it's never alarming. The K5 has noticeably more in reserve, and the eight-speed automatic feels more conventional than the K4's CVT if that's something you notice.

If you've never driven a CVT, drive one before deciding. Some people don't like how they feel under acceleration — the engine revs up and stays there rather than shifting through gears. Most people stop noticing within a week.

The K5 offers it on the GT-Line with the non-turbo engine. The K4 is front-wheel drive across the board.

Do you need it here? Almost certainly not. Southern California doesn't produce the conditions where AWD earns its keep, and you'd trade some fuel economy for it.

Where it's worth considering: regular winter trips to the mountains, or you simply prefer the extra traction in heavy rain. First-rain-of-the-season on PCH is genuinely slick — though good tires do more for that than AWD does.

Which fits Orange County driving?

Parking. The K4's smaller footprint is easier in downtown Huntington Beach, the pier lots, and older neighborhoods with tight street parking. If you park on the street regularly, this matters more than horsepower.

Commuting. Both are comfortable on the 405. The K5 is a bit quieter and more settled on longer drives — noticeable if you're going to Irvine or Long Beach daily. The K4 is cheaper to run.

Weekend stuff. Both have usable trunks. Neither is carrying a longboard inside, though both handle a roof rack fine.

Resale. Midsize sedans and compacts both hold value reasonably in California, where fuel economy stays in demand.

So which one?

Choose the K4 if you're commuting solo or with one passenger, you want the lowest cost to buy and run, and you park in tight spaces. It's the practical pick, and for most single drivers and couples it's the right one.

Choose the K5 if you carry adults in back regularly, you drive longer distances often, or you want the extra power and the more settled highway feel. The price difference buys real things.
