What the current Telluride brings

The Telluride was fully redesigned for the 2027 model year — a ground-up redesign, not a refresh.

There's a hybrid now. First time ever for the Telluride. The hybrid pairs a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with electric assist for a combined 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque — which is more power than the gas V6 it replaces in that role.

More torque across the board. The standard turbocharged engine makes nearly 50 lb-ft more torque than the outgoing model. You feel that most when merging onto the 405 with a full car.

Nine trims. LX, S, EX, X-Line EX, SX, X-Line SX, SX Prestige, X-Line SX Prestige, and X-Pro SX Prestige. The hybrid is offered on EX, SX and SX Prestige, plus X-Line versions of SX and SX Prestige.

One thing worth knowing: the off-road X-Pro trim only comes with the turbo-4, not the hybrid. If you want maximum capability and maximum efficiency in the same vehicle, that combination isn't offered.

What the Sportage Hybrid brings

Front-wheel drive is available on the S and EX trims, which lowered the entry price and improved fuel economy compared to the all-wheel-drive versions.

For most Orange County driving, front-wheel drive is completely sufficient. You're not dealing with snow. If you take regular trips to Big Bear or Mammoth in winter, that's a real argument for AWD — otherwise you're paying for capability you won't use.

Beach days and hauling gear

The Telluride wins this easily, but maybe not for the reason you'd think.

It's not just total cargo volume — it's the shape. Longboards, folding chairs, a wagon, a cooler and four people's worth of towels is a length problem more than a volume problem. With the third row folded, the Telluride swallows it.

The Sportage handles a normal beach day for two or three people without complaint. It's the surfboard-plus-family combination where it runs out of room.

The 405 commute
